The local news and weather guys always give us the latest status on our rainfall and drought statistics and today we are still 10" lower than the worst year on record for rainfall. Even as they reported a small town near here had wells running dry, we had neighbors with pristine green lawns. Early on the summer we let the grass go and just drug out the hose to water our young trees. I've only been to the car wash once since we'd get fined for washing our cars at our house. But that made me think, if we get fined for using water frivolously, how are car wash businesses allowed to go on? And while we got mail notices about water restrictions, I'd always see commercial businesses with sprinkler systems running. Last week I read an article about a proposed gigantic water park in Arizona - in the middle of the desert. Come on! Are they crazy! Today on Treehugger there was an article about the droughts hindering carbon dioxide uptake. The big picture was plants dying off, disturbing rainfall patterns and temperatures all leading to vicious cycle and more warming of the atmosphere.
The more I read, the more feel compelled to change my lifestyle to conserve more water. And since I know the majority of the population is probably not reading sites like Treehugger I wish the mainstream media would play a bigger part in teaching people some of the true effects of harming the environment.
